let's get to it. we want to start with hd radar because we have some showers and thunderstorms. it is right near hagerstown. we have some good flashes of lightning and some thunderstorms developing. a few light showers down working closer to the washington area. we are getting light sprinkles but this has become somewhat enhanced here even in the last 15 minutes. more clouds in the forecast today and a better and better chance we'll see some showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon. and generally, that is good news because that will help hold the temperatures down during the course of the afternoon. temperatures right now, not so pleasant. still in the 80s here in town. i'm not talking your music either, gurvir. 82 at reagan national. 81 at fredericksburg. we should not be in the 80s this time of day but unfortunately, the cool are air has not arrived yet. it will later this afternoon. more clouds and sun. showers and thunderstorms likely. about a 60 to 70% chance you

marker, they've had that construction tying up all but one lane. that is slowing down your roll as you head in towards stafford. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. a violent night in our area. police are searching for a man they say carjacked a woman's vehicle and took off way child still in the car t happened at a shell gas station on machine minute avenue northeast. fox 5 has learned a woman went inside to pay for gas leaving her 5-year-old daughter in the back seat. that is when the suspect jumped in the car and drove off. suspect dropped the little girl off in maryland unharmed. the vehicle was abandoned along martin luther king avenue in fairmont heights. suspect is described as an african-american male, six feet tall, dark complexion wearing a black shirt and blue queens. d.c. police are investigating a deadly shooting in adams morgan t happened about 90 last night. officers say the man was shot at least once. he was transported to a local

hospital in critical condition but he did die a short time later. there is no word yet on any suspects. in prince george's county, a police chase in largo ended with shots fired outside the county courthouse in upper marlboro. county police were chasing a vehicle but it is not clear why. the suspects inside that car ran into the officer's cruise are and then tried to run hum over that. officer opened fire hitting three suspects. all of them were taken into custody. the officer was injured. authorities are now hoping new enhanced video of a suspected serial attacker will help bring an arrest. >> they are looking for a man accused of several stabbings and a hammer tax. sarah simmons has the latest -- a hammer attack. >> reporter: there is a $5,000 reward that police have out for information leading to an arrest in this case. that is expected to be increased by the fbi by tens of

thousands of dollars. we are expected to hear an announcement about that later on this morning. but in the meantime, detectives want people to take a look at this surveillance video. this is footage from last friday in leesburg right before he attacked that 19-year-old with a hammer in this shopping center parking lot. the description of that suv, dark green with light beige trim. these random acts of violence have occurred in flint, michigan, toledo, ohio and in leesburg way total of 20 victims now. family of the victims spoke yesterday about their frustration in trying to come to grips and find a reason for this violence. >> why? not just my family, just why? people need to keep their ears open. you need to watch your

surroundings. >> reporter: and we also may get a better look at the suspect sometime this week hopefully by tomorrow. the fbi and vectors are working on surveillance video which apparently does indeed show the assault taking place friday in that shopping center parking lot. they are trying to enhance video, get a better look at that suspect so they can try to get that picture out there. we hope to get that sometime tomorrow. but as for the vehicle itself, they are having difficulty pulling any information since there is not a front license plate or an inspection sticker on the front. that is required in virginia but not required in michigan indicating he could possibly be from michigan. back to you. the other big story is the plane crash in alaska that killed five people including former senator ted steveness an one person from our area. we are checking horrific details of that plane crash now. 56-year-old bill phillips of germantown was one of the people killed. he was with his son on a

fishing trip when the plane went down. 13-year-old willy philip was forced to watch his father die just a few feet away. >> knowing willy so well, just thinking what he had to endure during waiting for somebody to come help him. the whole community was praying yesterday and just so happy to hear that willy was a survivor. >> the senior phillips was awe lawyer and a lobbyist here in washington. he used to be senator stevens chief of staff. and the senate is interrupting a summer recess to hold a special session today to honor former senator stevens and pass a border security bill. the maryland teen and grandmother who were hurt in a terrorist attack in africa are at home this morning. the bomb shattered the leg of emily kerstader and her grandmother is recovering from a broken arm. they were hurt while watching

making headlines this morning, some much-needed help continues to arrive for the victim of devastating flooding in pakistan. pakistani military helicopters are being deployed to drop aid in neighborhoods where villagers are still stranded by flood waters. nation is looking to raise $460 million to provide shelter, clean water food and medical care to those affected. in the gulf of mexico, texas is suing the government over the offshore drilling ban. the attorney general of the lone star state claims the drilling moratorium is unjustified. greg abbott filed an 18-page lawsuit in federal court in

after enduring the last couple of days. we had a record high temperature yesterday at dulles. it was 97 there if you want to impress your friends. good news is the cool weather on the way. we have rain showers across the region right now. we'll start with that. we'll go to all the numbers from yesterday. showers here andhiis all associated with this cold front that is actually working from the northeast. we call this a little back door cold front. it will be working through during the next couple of hours and i think we'll see the showers and maybe some thunderstorms break out here in earnest during the course of the afternoon. here we are top of 270 up towards -- working your way up towards gaithersburg and frederick. we've got some light showers. hagerstown, you can see a pretty good band of shower activity and all this breaking out along the frontal system which is now just starting to cross the region and starting to press off here to the south and west. a few more showers out towards columbia. temperatures not comfortable. i guarantee you that. 82-degree at reagan national. that is not the way you want to

start the day. fredericksburg, 81. leonardtown, 79 degrees. annapolis, 80. you get the idea here, a lot of humidity here in the forecast today. a lot of clouds in the forecast. temperatures a little cooler. still going to be a lot of humidity and an increasing chance that we'll see more showers and thunderstorms break out as we start to deal with the frontal system working its way to the south and west. good news this this forecast. generally speaking, it will be an improvement over last couple of days. we're in the going to be dealing with record heat. we'll get rid of some of that humidity as we get into tomorrow. today, the humidity will still be around as this frontal system will be a slow mover here. off to the north and east, slightly cereal weather. that moves in tomorrow with less humidity and high temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s tomorrow -- slightly cooler weather. more clouds and sun today. showers and thunderstorms return. some of those storms could be on the strong side later today.

warm, humid, 89 degrees which is a good eight to 10 degrees cooler than our daytime highs yesterday. 72 for an overnight low and that sets us up for a decent friday. saturday and sunday, a few scattered thunderstorms as well but high temperature here for the weekend only in the 80s. that is good news. that will do it for the forecast. let's get to on-time traffic and julie wright. >> and i always think you're waiting for somebody else to step into the shot. i neve know what is happening here. outer loop. beltway leaving university boulevard headed over towards 270, your lane are open. no problem, inner loop of the beltway at arlington boulevard. this is heading towards 66. crash right here tying up the center of the roadway. delays forming early as you travel north from gallows road. >> thank you. startling allegations against d.c.'s police department. the justice department has issued a report by the inspectors general claiming that d.c. police are missing

evidence in more than 200 dna cases. but police are denying it. fox 5's paul wagner has the story. >> reporter: the allegation is contained on page 20 of a 29- page report which focused on the fbi's dna backlog. it reads: the assistant chief says e and >> we would like to get some information from the oig at the fbi to find out exactly who the people are that made this allegation. we would like to see exactly what they're talking about. we are not exactly sure what they're referring to. >> reporter: but late this afternoon, an official with the inspector general's office told

fox 5 fbi official reported the missing cases and we con furthermored it with an mpd official would work on this issue. in fact, deep in the report on page 27, the fbi said a review determined the number of cases was actually 160 and tease police were unable to forward the evidence. >> so to suggest that something is completely missing, i think that is inappropriate. it is premature at best. >> you reached out to the oig to see if they have more information about who may have said that. >> who said it and what cases were they talking about. >> reporter: law enforcement sources familiar with the process say the problem began when d.c. police sent paperwork to the fbi asking for examinations without including the physical evidence. it was an effort to beat the deadline for a federal grant to reduce dna backlogs. sources say police are now attempting to find the evidence which may be stored at a variety of locations around the

knows what it is like to go through that time. well, he feels like i personally -- when that happened, i was shocked. so since he told me that b. that, i felt more like that he knew what i meant when i felt sad. >> through it all, the young boy and young man pushed ahead together. with big brother carlos opening the door of the world for little brother chris through sports and education. >> i love history. so when we go to museums, i explain things to him, how things work, where things come from, how they're made. we talk about planes. we talk about rod arrests and all kind of different stuff. it is really fulfilling for me when i get home. >> reporter: since carlos came into his life, chris has learned to swim, is excelling at soccer an has become a top notch student. but more importantly, he has come out of his shell.

it is thursday, august 1th. it is nice outside. nice at least right now it is. and again, same as yesterday, when i came in, looked at the temperature outside, 83 degrees. >> you think that's nice? >> it is better than 93- degrees. it is all relative. >> we'll give you a break. you're not used to this shift. >> i'm not complaining. >> it is a little warm, a little toasty for this time of

year. we've got clouds moving in. showers and thunderstorms back in the forecast. we need the rain. we need the cooler temperatures. humidity, that is going to be the oy under ith the forast. theshowers and thunderstorms starting to break out. not terribly impressive. we are hooking at the hd radar, right at the top of the beltway, we are getting a good shower. that has been pressing east towards silver spring, u towards beltsville. working across montgomery count you and a good band up toward frederick and hagerstown. all of this associated with this frontal system that is moving to the south and west and this will bring in the cooler air. not so much less humid air today but as we get into tomorw, it will start to feel noticeably better with the cooler temperatures and slightly less humidity. it is 82 at reagan national.

that commute south on 270. outer loop of the beltway in good shape between college park and bethesda. if you are traveling downtown kenilworth avenue northbound leaving pennsylvania avenue to burrows, be prepared for a delaw. beach drive shut down between the zoo and porter street in the southbound direction. that is due it a tree and wires down across the highway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. checking headline this more than, it was a violent night in our area. first, police are looking for a carjacker who is on the loose. they say he took off with a child still in the car. it happened at a shell gas station in the 3900 block of minnesota avenue northeast. a woman went inside to pay for gas leaving her 5-year-old daughter in the car. that is when the carjacker took

off. police called the woman's cell phone when was in the car and vince the the man to drop of the child. she was unhurt. gunfire erupted at the prince george's county courthouse. all of this start wade police chase that began in largo and ended up in upper marlboro. county police were following a vehicle. the suspects rammed into the officer's cruiser and tried to run the officer over. the officer opened fire. three of the suspects were hit and then at some point taken into custody. the officer was also injured. we can soon expect to see a clearer picture of a man accused going on a series of attacks in virginia and two other states. so far, 20 people have been victimized. five of them were killed. fox 5's sarah simmonsdown us live in leesburg with the latest on the investigation and what authorities are doing to track down this suspect. >> reporter: right now, there is a $5,000 reward no any information leading to an arrest in this case but now there is talk of increasing

that by several thousand dollars, money that would come from the fbi, in order to do that. we are expecting an announcement about that later on this morning. in the meantime, detectives want people to look at this surveillance video. this is footage from last friday in leesburg right before he taxed that 19-year-old with the hammer in the shopping center parking lot. again, they are still looking for a dark green suv, chevy blazer with light beige trim. these random acts have occurred in flint, michigan, toledo, ohio and leesburg way total of 20 victims. suspect is described as white male, late 20s or early 30s, around six feet tall way muscular build and light hair. we may get a better look maybe by tomorrow as to what exactly he looks like. there is surveillance footage that actually shows the assault that the fbi is working on, trying to enhance. >> the resources that are working to enhance this video

the body of a teenager swept away by major flooding in iowa has been identified. the 16-year-old girl got caught in a raging and rising creek with 10 other young people. crews were able to rescue the other drivers. many were found clinging to trees. one survivors viver said it only took sex understand for their cars to started sinking

it turns out that jennifer lopez may not be sitting at the american idol judges table after all. she was reportedly working on a deal to join randy jackson and possibly steven tyler for next season but people magazine says j-lo's demand got out of hand and the deal fell apart.

>> yeah, but you might not want it. we have some rain showers and thunderstorms moving into the area. that means cool are temperatures on the way. still going to be -- that means cooler temperatures on the way. still going to be huge you had out there. at least our high temperatures will only be 90-degree or so. we're focused on the north side of the beltway, college park, greenbelt, beltsville. the north side of the area getting some showers. this is pushing off shely to the east and to the north. let's open up the hd radar picture a little bit. we want to he show you more shower activity. we are getting a good thunderstorm now developing. you can see it up there near hagerstown. it is pushing generally across 70. northern montgomery county, carroll county, you will get more rain showers over the next hour or so, all so, wade cold front which kill cool things down. check out yesterday's high temperatures. sorry about that.
